The series is inspired by capillary waves that are formed when still water is disrupted from its lowest energy state of a flat surface by the interruption of a moving object. Consider how throwing rock into a river animates water, it reverberates out to expand the energy so it can go back to its initial flat state.
These paintings are a meditation on how life’s constant quest for answers, the mental motions of over-complication, the will to fulfill goals and meet societal milestones are waves of energy that need calming. The pieces are a call to inaction, to breathe and watch the energy expand to a state of calm. To return to a still surface, to reflect on the now and cherish the memories of personal relationships. What is being expressed is the beauty that is invisible to the naked eye, capturing a moment in time, the movement towards stillness.
Using the style of abstract expressionism, the broad strokes, use of color and the shapes of waves, the series interprets the world of the Spectra’s refined sensibilities. The abstraction of the natural to its raw form to illustrate a sense of calm. The theme of water resonates with Spectra’s origins as a soothing influence, a tranquil natural element that is the source of life as well as a metaphor of the ebb and flow of existence.
